Try adding a quart of K&W Trans-X, but make sure you don't over fill the transmission first. If you have to drain some fluid off first then so be it. I would pull the shift lever since u are already and use a emery cloth or something fine to clean the shaft up and make it smooth again. I'm pretty sure it's not just the outer O ring because the fluid is bleeding out from between the lever and the trans case. Nasty mess, but replacing the seals looks fairly easy. The problem is that the name "Cruise-O-Matic" seems to be used somewhat loosely.

These are easy items to replace. You drain the fluid, drop the pan, drop the valve body. Then you can pull the rods and change both the o-ring and seal. Then reassemble. If you're mechanically inclined you can do this in an hour even if you've never done it before. Good Luck!
